My twelve year old son owns two BMX bikes. He and a friend were out riding when it started raining. Not being familiar with flash flooding, they took refuge in a drainage ditch by our house. When the water started rising, they got out, but didn't get the bikes out. By the time I found my son he was nearly hysterical. We went home and calmed down, and after it stopped raining went back to see if we could find the bikes, but I told him not to get his hopes up. We found the less valuable bike almost immediately, but it was submerged and the water was still moving very quickly. I have a fear of rushing water, so I wouldn't go in after it until I knew how deep the water was, and how quickly it was moving. We went walking along the bank to see if we could spot the other bike, but to no avail. Just then a man appeared with his two dogs. The dogs jumped in and started swimming, and I could see the water wasn't terribly deep. The man asked what we were doing, and we explained. He jumped in and grabbed the bike we could see and handed it to me. Then he asked where the other bike was. When I told him we couldn't find it, he suggested we go look again. He spotted the second bike, jumped in, and grabbed it also. By this time my son and I were both in tears. I asked if I could pay him and he said of course not. I got his name, Mark DeLaney, and I know he lives on Craig Drive, and owns two Bizlas, but I have not been able to find him to bake him cookies or anything. But he will always be a hero to my son and me!
