The University Masonic Charitable Foundation (UMCF) Lodge No. 1190 was founded in 2008, as an opportunity for men to volunteer with and fundraise for local organizations throughout Austin. “Freemasons” are members of a worldwide fraternal organization that teaches moral lessons through rituals originated from medieval stonemasonry guilds. Our local group gives back to our community through groups like SAFE Alliance, Anthropopos Arts, Austin DeMoley Chapters and The University of Texas Elementary School System. UMCF spends around 150 hours per year doing boots-on-the-ground volunteer work like reading to UT Elementary School students, helping with logistics at SAFE Alliance’s annual Touch-a-Truck fundraiser, and serving meals at SAFE Alliance cookouts which gives members an opportunity to visit with children served by the organization – letting them know they’re loved and cared about.
In the last year alone, they raised over $36,000 which is the direct result of the care and commitment their members take in providing for children in need throughout Central Texas. As well as financial support, they offer their guidance and mentorship, creating strong bonds and lasting relationships during a pivotal time for the children they’re serving. A principal mission of Freemasonry is to make good men better. “We strive for balance in all that we do,” says one longtime local member. “The University Masonic Charitable Foundation allows us to reach many of the most at-risk individuals in our community. In fact, we have often been told that seeing a group of men of all religions and ethnicities coming together to assist children in need is inspiring!”
UMCF brings together men of all backgrounds to give back in a meaningful way, paving the path for future generations to follow. Dating back to 1914, the mission of Masons has always been to serve others – and they’ve done just that in Lodge 1190!
