Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas

For more than 20 years, Amy King has helped bring hope, strength, and joy to local children facing critical illnesses as a “fairy godmother” through Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas.

In 2002, Amy was introduced to Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas through a partnership her sorority, Chi Omega, had with the organization. After the introduction, she volunteered at a few events – then in 2008 attended the volunteer Wish Granter training where her heart was forever changed. Wish Granters are the Make-A-Wish volunteers who get to meet with children and learn their one true wish before it’s brought to life. So far, Amy has granted more than 40 wishes for local children with critical illnesses, and has no plans to stop any time soon. Experiencing a child’s reaction firsthand is what keeps her coming back to volunteer. “Wish Granters are a little like fairy godmothers,” Amy gleams. “We are volunteers who sit down with a child and their family to help uncover one very important thing … their one true wish! Then, after the Make-A-Wish staff work their magic behind the scenes, we get to come back and reveal that wish. I can tell you, there is nothing like it! It is a life-changing experience.”

Her journey with Make-A-Wish blossomed into something bigger than she could have ever imagined, and Amy’s “yeses” have evolved over the years. When she was asked to serve as the 2026 Wish Night Gala Chair, her answer was an immediate yes — not because she had extra time or that it was easy, but because it was meaningful. This new opportunity for her to serve the organization has allowed Amy to contribute what she believes is one of the most worthwhile impacts she’s been involved with. Saying yes has also led her Make-A-Wish journey to serving on the Central Texas Regional Council and the Governing Board. Each level of involvement has proven to Amy that their mission only gets more meaningful the closer you get to it.

“Amy’s dedication to Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas has had a meaningful impact on countless wish children and families,” shares Nikki Kelly, Chief Mission Officer. “Serving in various roles, Amy exemplifies the very best of volunteer service. Her generosity of time and talent has left a lasting mark on our organization, and we are incredibly grateful for her years of service and the enthusiasm and compassion she brings to our mission!”
