“Delysia is our road warrior!” says Hayes County Food Bank’s executive director Lisa Young. Logging around 300 annual hours and always doing so with a smile on her face, Delysia Moore goes out with one of the food bank’s vans first thing in the morning and does retail pickup for the program every week. This program brings in thousands of pounds of food weekly, which is then distributed to the food bank’s clients. Delysia is always willing to take on extra pickups and is one of the food bank’s most reliable drivers. In fact, they renamed their Driver of the Year Award to be the “Delysia Moore Driver Award.”
Along with just driving to collect and distribute food for the program, Delysia has stepped in to train other volunteer drivers to ensure the program can run smoothly and efficiently, which has truly helped the program reach new heights. The Hays County Food Bank serves low-income families or individuals, people experiencing crisis or any neighbor in need. With over 20 food distribution locations, their mission is to be able to serve everyone in their community and reduce transportation barriers by having sites all over Hays County. Annually, they feed an average of 175,000 people, rescue over 400,000 pounds of food, and distribute more than 1.3 million pounds of food to their community members in need! The Hays County Food Bank is committed to reducing waste – they partner with retailers like H-E-B, Sam’s Club, and local restaurants and retailers to “rescue” food that otherwise would be thrown away. The food they rescue is never expired – just mislabeled, incorrectly ordered, or left over. This food is then picked up by incredible volunteers like Delysia and thoroughly examined before being delivered to their clients to ensure it’s safe.
Delysia has volunteered her time each week for over ten years to help the food bank by driving, inspecting, hand-delivering and sorting food to ensure everyone in her community is fed. She is truly a champion for their program and cares deeply about serving the members of her community who are facing food insecurity, one pickup at a time!
