For 25 years, Gerard Van de Werken has volunteered with Austin Habitat for Humanity and has assisted in building 50 houses to date for members of our community while empowering others to give back as well.

Gerard Van de Werken started his volunteer work with Austin Habitat for Humanity (AHFH) nearly 25 years ago now and he’s still moving at full speed building houses for members of our community who may otherwise never have had the chance to be a homeowner. As a retired architect, Gerard has put his skills to use leading the AHFH Methodist Builds for nearly 25 years. He supervises build sites, directs other volunteers, and even brings his own congregation and many other Methodist church groups together to support homebuilding through sponsorship and on-site volunteer work. Gerard has led numerous community-based builds – in fact, his work and leadership have contributed to the making of 50 affordable homes!

AHFH has been serving our community for 40 years now, combatting the rising cost of living by building affordable housing for low-income families who are in need of a home. Not only does AHFH build safe, affordable homes, but they also provide free home repairs, as well as housing and financial counseling to their clients. The mission of AHFH is anchored around the deeply held belief that everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to live. Gerard has been a huge part of advancing this mission, not only being actively involved in so many builds, but also encouraging and empowering others to get involved too! “His ability to function as the ‘foreman’ of each Methodist Build and many other builds, and to continue attracting a crew of dedicated volunteers onsite, has significantly contributed to Austin Habitat’s ability to empower hardworking families to change their lives for the better through safe, stable, affordable homeownership,” Says Volunteer Engagement Coordinator Lauren Rizzo. “He truly represents the essence of our mission, and we are very grateful to have his support.”

At 76, Gerard has no plans of stopping soon – in fact, he is now training to join AHFH on their upcoming “blitz build” where they will be building 25 houses in just one week! He truly goes the extra mile when it comes to building these homes, working closely with each family throughout the home-building process to make them feel special and heard, cultivating close relationships with each client. Gerard’s tireless efforts have changed the lives of so many families throughout Central Texas by providing them a safe place to call home.
