Carissa Mallory Receives 72nd RecognizeGood Legend Award

In the past three years, Carissa Mallory worked to provide schools in Tanzania with resources to help Swahili-speaking students learn English and advance to secondary school.

RecognizeGood honored Carissa Mallory with the 72nd RecognizeGood® Legend award in a presentation at Barnes & Noble (12701 Hill Country Blvd, #O-140, Austin TX 78738) beginning at 3:00pm on Friday, December 15, 2017. During this event, RecognizeGood made a $1,000 pay-it-forward donation to Reading Around the World Literacy Initiative in Carissa’s name.

English language skills often proved to be a barrier to pursuing a high school education in Tanzania. When Carissa Mallory, a recent graduate of Vandegrift High School, learned this, she decided to found the Reading Around the World Literacy Initiative (RAWLI).

Tanzanian secondary education is currently taught in English using books donated by the United States and Great Britain. Primary school students have limited instruction time for English classes and a short period to learn English fluently. Frequently, this leads to many kids being unable to pass the entrance exams to secondary school. Carissa learned of the literacy issue and its ripple effects in Tanzanian schools from her aunt. She traveled with her parents to witness the need first-hand. On that trip, she donated whatever books she could collect. Since then, Carissa’s efforts have provided more than 12,000 books, 350 desks and chairs and an educational app to help Swahili-speaking students learn English.

As a 2017 Legend, Carissa is now eligible to participate in RecognizeGood’s Say Thanks Austin campaign.

This annual event presents Central Texas with a unique opportunity to say “thank you” to a group of remarkable individuals. The participant with the most Thank You votes receives a pay-it-forward donation of $10,000 to the nonprofit of their choice.
