Founded in 2007, SCARE for a CURE is an all-volunteer organization that hosts a Haunted Adventure each Fall whose proceeds primarily go Austin’s Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC). The Haunted Adventure is an interactive experience offered to the public with a different storyline each year and takes about 8 weeks of pre-production, followed by 11 showings. In addition to the Haunted Adventure, SCARE for a CURE puts on an annual Quest Night in the Spring, which is an interactive medieval adventure-volunteers spend hours writing original quests, creating new combats that are solved by rolling giant dice and creating puzzles for teams to solve. This event takes 6-8 weeks of pre-production, followed by 8 run nights. The proceeds from their Quest Night primarily go towards improvements to their site and equipment, and for workshops for volunteers. SCARE for a CURE is 100% volunteer run, consisting of hundreds of volunteers who dedicate around 15,000 hours annually to put on these events!
In addition to donating proceeds to BCRC, they also run a program called “5 by $500”, where volunteers get to select 5 local charities that they feel could use a $500 donation to help their causes. Over the years, this program has given back over $15,000 to local charities such as OutYouth Austin, Chorus Austin, Central Texas Dachshund rescue, Crowe’s Nest Farms and Austin Creative ReUse. They also regularly give back to local food banks through hosting food collections and help support several school programs.
Besides raising money for local organizations, the mission at SCARE for a CURE is to foster a sense of volunteerism and mentor the youth involved in the program so that they can learn new skills and have a safe space to get together and give back to their community. Along with giving back to our community, SCARE for a CURE has provided their younger volunteers with over $50,000 in scholarships to help them continue their education. “We have become a family!” says President Susan Pratt. “We support and help each other as needed. We hang out together. We celebrate together, and then, we get back to work and create amazing shows and no one gets paid except the charities we choose.”
