Gerard Van de Werken is a dedicated Austin Habitat for Humanity volunteer who has assisted in building 50+ houses for members of the community, over the span of 25 years.

Gerard started his volunteer work with Austin Habitat for Humanity (AHFH) several years ago and still moves full speed ahead building houses for members of the community who may otherwise never have the chance to be a homeowner. He is a retired architect who puts his skills to use leading build sites, directing other volunteers, and bringing groups together to support homebuilding, and has made a huge impact on AHFH’s work.

On Sunday December 14th, RecognizeGood had the honor of attending AHFH’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation Party hosted at the Austin Film Society Cinema, where we concluded their award session with a surprise presentation of our Legend Award to Gerard- who had no idea he was receiving an award that night! He gave a brief heartfelt speech about how much the work he does means to him and how thankful he is for AHFH, which tearfully concluded the awards presentation.
