Cheryl White first began volunteering with The Dog Alliance in 2011 when she joined the Bow Wow Therapy Dogs program. The program brings therapy dogs to visit hospitals and public libraries to help anyone going through a health challenge, bring relief to healthcare workers, or working with children experiencing reading challenges. Cheryl signed up to be one of the volunteers in charge of bringing therapy dogs to these places, but she didn’t stop there.
In 2014, the Dog Alliance started the Hounds for Heroes initiative, an accredited service dog program for military veterans and first responders. Cheryl was among the first to volunteer. She completed her training in 2019 to become a service dog puppy raiser. Each dog assigned represents a 24/7 commitment spanning from an 8-week-old puppy to an 18-24-month-old dog completing strenuous training. Cheryl has been responsible for three dogs that have been paired with military veterans. Cheryl embodies the concept of “volunteer commitment” accepting full responsibility for an outcome with far-reaching, positive benefits.
In 2021, the Dog Alliance introduced a new fundraiser – Bow Wow Delivery – that required several months of planning. When asked if she would join the planning committee, her response was an immediate “yes” and she proved to be an invaluable member who thoughtfully added direction and readily accepted tasks. Debi Krakar, Executive Director of the Dog Alliance describes Cheryl as a kind, gentle spirit who uses her love of dogs to improve the lives of countless children and adults in our community. “She is a joy for our staff to work with and we often seek her advice.” She never seeks the limelight and absolutely embodies “selflessness and leadership” as she works every day to improve the health and well-being of others through a well-trained dog and the kindness of a volunteer.
Cheryl also understands the stewardship required for sponsors – especially those who sponsor service dogs or therapy dog programs. Cheryl readily joins update calls or visits and regularly captures photos and video of specific dogs in training to share with these important sponsors. When asked why she always steps up, Cheryl replied, “My parents instilled in us the firm belief to help others and give back.”
