After an unfortunate accident, Drake Trotter turned an overwhelming personal challenge into an opportunity to help others through “The Drake,” a charity golf tournament where he’s raised over $150,000 for the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation.
In 2017, Drake Trotter dove into a pool and broke his neck, three vertebrae in his spine and his occipital bone. There were no guarantees that he would wake from surgery, recover from an induced coma, or get through the long list of complications that followed. After 2 months in and out of the ICU, and many months of physical therapy, Drake recovered completely. Since his full recovery, he has hosted a golf tournament dubbed “The Drake” to raise money for the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation and to date over $150,000 has been donated.
During Drake’s recovery, he spent several months in a neck brace. It was at that time he was introduced to the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation (LSPF). Founded in 1979, LSPF’s mission is to cure spinal cord paralysis through funding research, recovery, and recreation. Over the years, LSPF has achieved milestones within each of the “three R’s” for those living with spinal cord injury.
Drake and his family use the inspiration of Drake’s recovery to encourage others, promote awareness for their cause and aim to improve the lives of those with spinal cord injuries waiting for a similarly successful recovery. With the help of hundreds of golfers and about 70 volunteers from all over, “The Drake” tournament is making a huge impact to help cure spinal cord paralysis within our lifetime.
