The Maywald family has achieved remarkable success in their efforts to support Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas through their annual Christmas light display. Since 2015, they have granted 35 wishes and raised over $350,000. Their passion for Christmas lights inspired them to create this display back in 2015, and they have grown increasingly impressive each year. Their son, Jordan personally builds most of the display pieces by hand, and in 2022, the family hung an astonishing 300,000 lights.
The Maywald’s light display is free to the Austin community, and they only ask attendees make a donation to Make-A-Wish Central and South Texas whose mission is to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The Maywald’s goal is to create something that everyone can enjoy and walk through. In 2019, their light display was so exceptional that they won “The Great Christmas Light Fight” on ABC making Jordan the youngest person to win in the show’s history.
While the first donation they made was modest – a mere $250 – their determination to donate a wish (at a $5,000 cost) the following year paid off. Since then, the family has granted 35 wishes, with an average cost of $10,000 per wish. Most of the money they receive comes from people who visit the light display and drop donations in their donation boxes, while some come from generous donors online. The Maywald’s commitment to helping others is a true testament to their generosity and compassion, and goes to show that virtually any hobby can be used for good
